Act 204: South Carolina's New Grading Law

South Carolina’s updated grading requirements promote fairness, consistency, and meaningful opportunities for student growth and success. Here is what Bridlewood Academy families need to know.

What Families Need to Know

Grades will reflect student performance.

  • Teachers will record the grade that reflects the student’s demonstrated performance.
  • Grades in PowerSchool will show what students earn on each assignment.
  • Grades will not automatically be raised to a minimum score of 50.

Missing assignments will be recorded.

  • If a required assignment is missing, a 0 may be entered as a temporary placeholder.
  • Once the assignment is completed, the grade will be updated to reflect the student’s work.
  • If work is not completed within the required timeline, the 0 will remain and will be included in the student’s grade.

How Families Can Help

  • Check grades and assignments. Regularly review your child’s progress and look for missing work.
  • Make sure work is submitted. Encourage your child to complete and turn in all required assignments on time.
  • Ask questions early. If your child is struggling or has missing work, contact the teacher as soon as possible.
  • Build a routine at home. Set aside regular time for homework, studying, and checking assignments.
  • Stay connected with the school. Talk with your child’s teachers about academic progress and available support.
